解释：我看子长所写的史记，寓言亦占六七成。班固在才识与抱负方面，比子长相差很远；但是对于治世的典章，六经的主旨，文字的源流，天人之间的事情，叙述得非常详备。这怎能和些才器短浅，在一先生面前互争得失，而柔顺自悦的人相比呢？

曾国藩，字涤生，湖南湘乡人，道光年间进士。1853年初（咸丰二年末），以吏部侍郎身份在湖南办团练，后扩编为湘军，镇压太平军，被清廷视为“同治中兴”的功臣，并因此以大学士任两江总督、直隶总督等。

早年在京师曾跟随梅曾亮，并与朱琦、王拯、吴敏树等桐城派人物相往来。后以桐城派为号召，网罗人材。吴汝纶、张裕钊、薛福成、黎庶昌等都曾担任其幕僚，并以曾门弟子相称。著有《曾文正公诗文集》、《圣哲画像记》等。

《圣哲画像记》是曾国藩于咸丰九年（ 1859 年）所作，他从数千年灿若群星的历史名人中精选三十二位，画龙点睛地概述其学问成就，给后学提供了便捷的治学阅读门径，也为后来张之洞的《书目答问》起到探源导流的作用。

曾国藩继承姚鼐“义理、词章、考据”之文论，创造性地提出了“德行”、“政事”、“言语”、“文学”四分法，表达了其力图消弭汉宋之争的卓越见识。曾国藩的《圣哲画像记》，选取历史上文（王）周（公）孔（丘）孟（轲），左（丘明）庄（周）马（司马迁）班（固），葛（诸葛亮）陆（贽）范（仲淹）马（司马光），周（敦颐）程（颢、颐）朱（熹）张（载），韩（愈）柳（宗元）欧（阳修）曾（巩），李（白）杜（甫）苏（轼）黄（庭坚），许（慎）郑（玄）杜（佑）马（端临），顾（炎武）秦（蕙田）姚（鼐）王（念孙）”等三十二位非圣即贤者，一一述赞，提示其学术贡献，然后仿照汉代武梁祠、鲁灵光殿等图画伟人事迹之故事，命其子曾纪泽描绘遗像，合为一卷，以为斯文之传，藏于家塾，供后嗣取法遵行。

《圣哲画像记》大旨有二，一是为子孙指点问学之津梁，二是训示治学当持之正确之心态。
